National Center for Learning Disabilities (Virtual)

Summer 2024 Fellow: Crystal Peng

Organization Description

The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) partners with educators, students, families, and young adults to advance innovative research and advocate for equitable policies that address systemic barriers in schools, workplaces, and communities. NCLD’s policy and advocacy team works to advance both federal and state policy priorities. The research and innovation team conducts primary and secondary research and supports the bridging of research to policy and practice. The programming team leads NCLD’s initiates including annual scholarships and awards, Young Adult Leadership Council, and Family Leadership Council. We are a tightknit, small team and the fellow will have the opportunity to meet everyone on the team and advance our work.

Description of the Work

The fellow will also develop materials to inform the team about novel and emerging trends and issues related to the education of students with learning disabilities.

In order to ensure a quality internship, based on the priorities set at the time of the internship and based on the personal skills and experience of the fellow, NCLD will craft a unique project plan for you. Previous fellows have worked on projects including the development of an “LD Data Library”, research and analysis for a report on private school vouchers, an analysis and database of college’s accommodations policies, and a series of research briefs on the intersection of environmental impacts and learning disabilities.

The fellow will participate in education and disability-rights coalition meetings, and will independently attend virtual policy events, briefings, and Congressional hearings. The fellow will assist with NCLD events related to policy and advocacy including NCLD’s LD Day of Action in Washington, DC. The fellow will also participate in planning and implementing communications and marketing efforts related to Public Policy and Advocacy including, but not limited to, blog, Facebook and twitter/X posts, emails and action alerts.

Desired Skills

We are looking for a fellow with excellent research, writing and analytical skills. We would prefer someone who also has exceptional communication skills especially writing abilities. We hope to have someone who desires to advocate for children and adults with learning and attention issues and a basic knowledge of learning disabilities and education and disability policy issues. Individuals with disabilities are encouraged. An ability to adapt and be flexible when the circumstances and agenda demand it would also be helpful. The fellow should also be able to work as part of team, but complete work independently with guidance and mentorship as needed.
