Laura Martinez is the youngest elected official in East Palo Alto’s history. She is also the first Latina woman and East Palo Alto native to serve on City Council. First elected to City Council in 2008, Martinez served as Vice Mayor last year. She also works as director of afterschool programs for East Palo Alto Phoenix Academy, a charter school for students in 7th through 12th grades. When she graduated from Palo Alto High School in 2002, Martinez was featured in the San Jose Mercury News after winning a regional “Kid Who Cares” award for her community service, and she received a B.A. in Sociology from Whittier College. She will be speaking about her experiences in direct service, community organizing, and local politics, as well as her plans for policy reform in East Palo Alto.
